Becoming a swimmer member of Barry Beavers

The club has qualified volunteer Halliwick Instructors, all swimmers are inducted by the Instructors, to find out about the new swimmers needs.

It essential that all swimmers always have a responsible known person with them in the pool, therefore a swimmers parent or carer goes into the pool with their swimmer at all pool sessions.

Halliwick Swimming Therapy is used at all times, teaching by supporting, using games and toys so swimmers can learn to be safe and happy in the water.

All the club’s Halliwick Instructors present will be in the pools at all times to teach and support the swimmer using the Halliwick Concept.

More information is available from the Halliwick Instructors at the swimmers initial induction to the club.

Other Benefits of being a member of Barry Beavers are:

The club has an active social side with annual events, for all members, families and friends to enjoy.

The swimming sessions are split into two start times each are for one hour only. The first starts at 3.30pm until 4.30pm, this is for swimmers who need more support in the water. The second session starts at 4pm until 5pm, especially for our competent and more independent members. Each swimmer is assessed and if needed has one to one support, we use the Halliwick method for teaching swimming therapy to meet the needs of all disabilities. This is a proven method established over 70 year ago.

The Halliwick Concept

We have trained Halliwick Instructors and volunteer Helpers who all help all the swimmers. The Halliwick philosophy is based on two points Water Happiness and Safety in the water. We use games, music and suitable toys to have fun, and to teach swimming therapy and safety.

There is a proficiency badge scheme in place, these are Halliwick badges, members learn the skills together, no one is made to do them, but most like to receive a badge, and are very proud to have one. We also have a gala team, who take part in galas all over the Astra 15 Region at other disabled swimming clubs, this happens throughout the year at certain dates. No one has to take part in the galas if they do not wish to.

There are always opportunities to become a volunteer, with many varied ways of helping, just ask what might be of interest to you, you would be very welcomed by everyone.
